How to clean granite and quartz worktops?

How to look after your granite worktop

Granite is a perfect material for kitchen worktops and bathroom worktops; granite is heat resistant, scratch resistant, hygienic and, provided it is cared for properly, extremely durable. It is these natural properties that make granite worktops a popular choice for the toughest environments within a home, particularly kitchens and bathrooms.

Granite worktops maintenance

  • Clean your granite worktops with a damp cloth. Be sure to dry off any water afterwards.

  • To maintain the surface shine of your worktops, use any liquid all-purpose cleaner; we recommend Method Granite and Marble Cleaner.

  • Never use abrasive detergents or scouring pads.

  • Avoid spilling substances such as oven cleaners, juices, wine, oils.

  • Avoid any acids such as vinegar or lemon juice, paint removers, nail varnish remover etc. Although your worktops are sealed, substances like this can damage the sealer and create marks.

  • While granite can cope with the heat of hot pans, putting the pans in the same spot every time could eventually lead to discoloration.

Quartz worktops maintenance

  • A damp cloth is usually sufficient to clean quartz worktops

  • Be sure to clean up any spillages as quickly as possible

  • For sticky spots use detergent or a general cleaning solvent – Method Granite + Marble Cleaner works here as well

  • If there is hardened food or limescale on your quartz worktop use a non-metallic scouring pad. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any residue.

  • Don’t cut directly on quartz worktops. Whilst quartz is an extremely hard and durable material, it has soft spots and can scratch in places or even chip.

  • Avoid spilling any strong chemical solvents such as chlorides, varnish strippers, paint, oil soaps, permanent ink, nail varnish remover or oven cleaner onto your quartz worktop

  • Always use a trivet or heat pad for hot pans. Extreme heat can affect or damage your quartz worktop.
